Shirley Lennon
My name is Shirley Lennon, I live at 1104 Champions Point Drive (Riverwalk Subdivision). I am interested in becoming a member of the HOA Board. I moved to Treyburn in 2004 after retiring from NIH (Federal Government) in Bethesda, MD. I served as an administrator for the Director of NIH, writing speeches and grants and assisting with research grants and arranged for tours of NIH for Presidents, US Senators and Congress and foreign dignitaries.
I have been a Notary and Notary Signing Agent (working with real estate agents) for 20 years. I am bonded and must get a background security check each year. With my background in notary work, it has required me to have honesty and integrity.
I served on this HOA Board from 2012 until 2023. I served in the following capacities - President, V. President and Secretary. In 2009 I wrote an article as a guest columnist for the News and Observer about the feasibility of having streetlights on my street as a deterrent to street crime. Champions Point Drive had a few home break-in during this time. Shortly thereafter my street got streetlights installed by the City of Durham.
I am a Minister in my church, a mother and grandmother and am involved in community service work.
With my background in being a notary, an administrator, public relations, community service work and previously serving on this HOA Board I would be a great asset to the Board in helping to keep our community a great and safe place to live.
- What would be your primary goals and priorities if elected to the HOA board?
- More interaction between board members and community members to come together and exchange information and ideas to foster better relationships. This is something that could be done 3 or 4 times a year. Have a representative from the different sections in Treyburn to attend a designated board meeting to address the needs of that particular section. Have a fun day for members and their families to come out and eat, play games, and get to know each other. Would also be a time for the children in the community to reach out to each other and discuss recreational and school issues and concerns. Updated TROA Website. Have some scheduled meetings online and through mechanisms such as zoom, meet, etc.
- How would you ensure the HOA's financial health and stability?
- Discussions about how to have smarter budgeting. Start asking in June about the needs of various areas in Treyburn with budgeting meetings/workshops with Community representatives. During meetings with community and board members ask about keeping abreast of necessary changes and upgrades needed to keep up the values of our property so that people will be honored to purchase a home in Treyburn. Since we are in North Durham, have information readily available about this area here in North Durham.
- How much time can you realistically commit to the HOA board duties each month?
- I would be available for the regularly scheduled board meeting plus any other necessary impromptu called meetings and events. I am retired which gives me more flexibility.
- Can you assume the responsibility of enforcing the covenants, even if it makes you unpopular?
- I would assume the responsibility of the enforcement of the community’s covenants.
